From Janis: I started this song while walking on a Provincetown Beach. It began to pour, but it was warm, and I was happy to keep walking. Once I got back to Nashville, I was stuck, so I called my friend Jenny Yates and asked her to help me out. She brought the lyrics and melody to another, better place. This is an alternate mix from my Revenge CD. Although it featured my dream band, I was never completely happy with the mixes. To my ears, very often the rough mixes sound better than the finals. They retain an honesty that's hard to replicate once you've "cleaned up" things that might not be perfect sonically, but are perfect emotionally. I love this song so much that I went ahead and asked my friend Craig Krampf to do a remix. In addition to being a good friend and great drummer, Craig had produced Melissa Etheridge's first album. He had incredible range, from Alice Cooper to The Motels to Steve Perry and Kim Carnes. Though we never were able to release it, I love this version, which I think stands right next to the live version from Working Without a Net - a personal favorite of mine too (even if it is my own work!). Special thanks to my co-writer, Jenny Yates, and her generosity!

Take Me Walking In The Rain
by Janis Ian/Jenny Yates

This town isn't big enough for my dreams
This place is just about to break at the seams
Baby baby, you and I
need just a little bigger piece of the sky
Big hopes, big dreams
Baby, can you set me free?

Take me walking in the rain
Take me dancing in the waves, baby
Let 'em wipe away the tears
Wash away the years
Take me walking in the rain

Take me right here where I stand
Let me feel your heart on mine
Life'll never be the same
We've got everything to gain
Take me walking in the rain

This life may be good enough for the rest
but this heart is just about to break through my chest
I remember every rule I've heard
and I'm strangling on every word
I can't say they're wrong,
but baby how can I go on?

Take me walking in the rain
Take me dancing in the waves, baby
Let 'em wipe away the tears
Wash away the years
Take me walking in the rain

Take me right here where I stand
Let me feel your heart on mine
I don't want somebody new
I just want the rest of you
Take me walking in the rain

Take me right here in the sand
Life ain't what we plan
