Grammy winner Audie winner
"Her mesmerizing memoir transports us back in time with both words and music. Each chapter begins with an evocative lyric, and in this audio, read and sung by Ian, listeners are thrust into the moment."
– Booklist featured review
When Janis' autobiography first came out in print, no one wanted to make an audio book of it. We mean, no one. Not small publishers. Not big publishers. No one. Even when she offered to work for expenses, no one. "Audio books by singers just don't sell." "Who wants another bad audio book?" "You know it's a different thing than making a record, right?" So kudos to Audible.com and director Stefan Rudnicki for taking a chance, because...
Much to everyone's surprise, after a slow start (and brilliant reviews), the audio book went on to win a Grammy for "Best Spoken Word". The other nominees in that category were First Lady Michelle Obama, former President Bill Clinton, and television hosts Rachel Maddow and Ellen Degeneres. The competition prompted Janis to begin her acceptance speech by saying "There's a joke in here somewhere... an ex-president, the First lady, and three lesbians walk into a bar...."
A lot of people purchased the audio book after buying and reading the print edition, just so they could hear Janis singing what she writes about in the print book. A lot of people really love this during long car rides. A lot of people think she should do a lot more audio books. She's done several, but there's only so much time!
12 hours, 10 CD's, with Janis singing and playing throughout.
