Arranged & performed by Kath T. Gileno
Technical support, coach: Joan Maute

From Kath: "I began playing guitar at the age of seven, and received a scholarship to Juilliard as a teenager but for many reasons could not attend. As my guitar journey continued, I wanted to generate more sounds, so I began tapping on it, approaching the fretboard as a piano, and using alternate tunings. While I've performed and written from time to time, it's the music, expression and oneness with the guitar that have really mattered to me."

From Janis: Many many years ago, I received a dozen home-made CD's from a couple of fans named "Luce and Kath". They were unreleased Billie Holiday recordings: rehearsals, alternate takes, conversations... and though they've since been released in various box sets, I still cling to my homegrown copies. Kath turned out to be "Kath of the Guitar" on my message board; when I met them at a living room concert, I realized I'd been seeing both at my shows for decades. She's tried and tried to teach me what she does on the guitar, but I can't do it, and that's okay because she does it just fine. Kath doesn't consider herself a "professional" because she doesn't make a living doing music, but being a "professional" is not what it's about. It's the joy of it that matters!
It was a blow to us all when Luce passed away a short while ago - ever cheerful, ever supportive, she was a mainstay at shows and, of course, in Kath's life. In fact, Kath hadn't really picked up the guitar and sung until Joan Maute and I began urging her to contribute here. I'm so very grateful she did, because this heartfelt version is all I could have asked.

Better times, better times will come.
Better times, better times will come.
When this world learns to live as one,
oh, better times will come

When we greet each dawn without fear
knowing loved ones soon will be near
When the winds of war
cannot blow any more
Oh, better times will come

Though we live each day as our last
we know someday soon it will pass
We will dance, we will sing
in that never-ending spring
Oh, better times will come

Oh, better times will come
