The basics: Produced by Charles Callelo; recorded spring 1969 in NYC; released late 1969 (Verve/Forecast)

Inside scoop: Janis wanted Callelo because of his work with Laura Nyro. ("She had a hard time communicating with musicians; he used to ask me to come over and translate. She'd say 'Make it purple like that chair' and I'd tell them 'I think she means largo'.) Realizing that MGM (Verve Forecast) had probably signed Society's Child more in hope of a tax loss than anything altruistic, and having gone through seven company presidents in three years, Janis recorded this album as her last under the Verve contract. She also wasn't sure yet whether she'd ever be what she considered a good songwriter, but she saw that as her goal.

Original album is out of print, but available in the "Society's Child: The Verve Recordings" Collection
