Description: This "set" consists of three DVD's from Public Televisions "American Masters" series: one on Stella herself, one on director Harold Clurman, married to Stella during the formation of the Group Theater, and one on the Group Theater. Supplied to us by Tom Oppenheim (Stella's grandson) of the Stella Adler Conservatory in New York, we have exactly four sets - an absolute must have for any lover of the arts.

Notes: The great Stella Adler was Janis' first real female mentor - they met when Janis signed up for acting classes in the early 80's. After her first class, Janis immediately signed up for everything else Stella taught. When they met, Janis was 33 years old, and Stella 83; they remained fast friends until Stella's death ten years later.

In a poignant memory, Janis relates: Stella Adler was one of the greats, an indelible figure who put her stamp on the American theater and everyone around her. The effect she had on me can only be compared to the effect my mother and father had onme - it was that enormous. Her work with Harold Clurman in developing the Group Theater, her insistence that Stanislavki's original method be followed rather than changed into some Americanized self-pitying piece of psycho-babble, her insistence that artists follow the path of "the theater of ideas, not the theater of legs", changed American artists, and artistry, forever.

She was someone I could go to in a storm. When she died, I was in the middle of making my "comeback album", Breaking Silence. Somehow, that was fitting. Two days after her death, I received a Chanukah card from her, with a sweet note enclosed. That, too, seems fitting.
