The basics: Produced by Shadow Morton; recorded at Mira Sound Studios, NY, 1967, released January 1968 (Verve/Forecast).

Inside scoop: With only 9 months to write the songs, in-between touring and attending high school, Janis turned to the piano for inspiration, jotting down ideas in her school notebooks in her spare time. Queen Merka & Me was written sitting by the fountain at Lincoln Center, waiting for her friend Merka Fletcher to arrive. Shady Acres was banned from network television because of its uncompromisingly harsh look at old age homes, until Joey Bishop bravely asked Janis to sing it during a live segment of his television show. The laughter in And I Did, Ma is live; when the penny whistle came in, the drummer began laughing so hard that he fell off his stool, causing Janis to fall off her piano bench.

Original album is out of print, but available in the "Society's Child: The Verve Recordings" Collection
